Ladder Rules 2010

1. The rules of the ladder must be obeyed! (any changes, alterations of compromises must be agreed by a member of the committee) Failure to comply will mean that your peg FALLS OFF THE LADDER (Eeep!)

2. The first week of each term will be 'Ladder night'. Fencers will be put into poules based on ability or age and then fight for their place on the ladder. Fencers will be ranked and pegs placed on the ladder at the end of the night. Ladder night may be postponed if there are not enough fencers that week.

3. Fencers who are not present on ladder week can join the ladder, but must always start at the bottom. If there is more than one late addition, then they are added on a first come, first served basis.

4. If fencers fail to fill in their poule sheets correctly on ladder night – coaches will decide the initial rankings.

5. The person at the top of the ladder on the last week of term, will be the 'ladder champion', their name will be added to the hall of fame on the website and they will get to take home the trophy for the term.

How does it work?

1. You may challenge anyone up to three places above you on the ladder. If there is a person or persons absent that week you may ignore their pegs (this does NOT apply to the top peg!).

2. If a coach believes it is unwise for two fencers to fence, then they shall be given permission to ignore that peg. This cannot apply for top-spot.

3. The person who challenges gets to choose the number of hits and time-limit. This can be anything from 1 hit to 45 hits. HOWEVER, the person who is challenged is allowed to refuse, in which case the fight will be 15 hits and 3 lots of 3 minutes.

4. If you win the fight, you swap pegs with the person that you beat. If you lose, then both pegs remain where they are.

5. You can challenge the same person only once on each night (this may be waived by the coaches if there are only a few people present).

6. The person being challenged can refuse the challenge if:

a) the coach has given them special permission

(eg because they are training for a specific competition)

b) they have already agreed to fence someone else

c) they are injured or unable to fence for a valid reason

7. Fights should be reffed if possible.

8. The two week rule. If you are absent from club for any reason (other than club being cancelled) for two consecutive weeks, you will FALL OFF THE LADDER. The coaches will be the only people allowed to remove people from the ladder and this will be done half an hour after the session is due to start.

9. We reserve the right to change or ammend these rules as we see fit. Fights shall be fought according to normal club and BFA rules and sanctions shall be used where appropriate.
